NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab discovered and patented a CMOS active pixel
sensor that Envision uses for high-resolution industrial radiography
or x-ray imaging. With this efficient, digital industrial radiography,
x-rays are converted to photons using an intimate contact conversion
screen. Photons strike tiny 39micron pixels and are converted into
electrons stored in capacitors. Each pixel has its own amplifier that
is switched on and off by timing and control circuitry right on the
chip. Voltages from the amplifiers go through analog-to-digital converters
right at the sensor. For more information on industrial radiography
